Moringa oleifera Lam. (Family: Moringaceae) is commonly known as the horseradish or drumstick tree. It is called“Ma-rum”in Thailand。Moringa oleifera leaves contain significant amounts of bioactive compounds with high antioxidant activities. “The leaves, which are easy to grow and rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, are becoming widely used in projects fighting against malnutrition. Producing moringa leaves is also a means of generating agricultural income, developing the food processing industry and founding new businesses” isGrowing and Processing Maringa Leaves. The drying solution an essential step for growing and processing maringa leaves.
There are three main drying solutions
1. Room Drying. Moringa leaves are spread in a well-ventilated room or warehouse. The place should be insect, rodent ad dust proof. To avoid contamination and germs, the air must not be directly oriented toward to leaves. Also it is advisable to turn the leaves over at least once with sterile gloves to improve uniform drying. The drying time maximum reach 4 days. The loading density should not exceed 1kg/㎡. But, room drying solution cannot be guaranteed mould-free with the maximum recommended moisture content of 10%. Hence, we do not suggest this method
2. Solar Drying. It is a environmentally-friendly drying solution. The temperature range is 35℃-55℃,the temperature should not go above 55℃. In addition, the air intake should be filtered to keep out dust and loading density is under 2kg/㎡.
3. Mechanical drying. Electric or gas hot-air dryers are the most common drying solution. Today, we could like to introduce an economic and fast drying machine industrial microwave. Microwave dryer is briefly categorized as two models including batch oven (tray loading) and tunnel continuously microwave. Loading density is exceed 2kg/㎡. On the other hand, microwave energy could uniformly and quickly dry out the leaves as microwave directly penetrates leaves without energy medium conduction. According to the experiment data, microwave is defined as the most efficient drying solution for processing moringa leaves and seed.
